LED lighting fixtures are among the most cost-effective and reliable lighting options for commercial and public buildings. As they are up to 90% more efficient when compared to their incandescent counterparts, it stands to reason that they represent excellent value for money in large-scale lighting installations. However, what type of lifespan is associated with LED lights?
Most LED lights will not suddenly stop functioning like an incandescent or halogen bulb. Rather, they will begin to lose their brightness over time. A bulb crosses a threshold when it begins to emit less than 70% of its initial light output. This is known as the "L70 rating" and is used to predict how long a light will last before it noticeably dims.
Most incandescent lights last between 750 and 2,000 hours before failing. When this is compared to between 50,000 and 100,000 hours of light (approximately 14 years of service) emitted from LED fixtures, the lifetime savings in energy bills and bulb replacements become very clear.
